Brings python-web-applications/ in line with the maintenance update of Python Web Applications: Deploy Your Script as a Flask App.

Changes

  • app.yaml: runtime: python38 → runtime: python313. Google App Engine decommissioned the python38 runtime; python313 is supported until 2029-10-10 and is what the updated tutorial uses.
  • requirements.txt: Flask==2.1.2 → Flask==3.1.3, matching the tutorial's requirements.txt listing.
  • README.md: replaced the Flask 1.x dev-server banner (Environment: production, lazy loading) with the output Flask 3.1.3 actually prints.

main.py already matches the tutorial's final code and needed no change.

Verification

Fresh Python 3.13 venv, pip install -r requirements.txt (Flask 3.1.3, Werkzeug 3.1.9, MarkupSafe 3.0.4), then python main.py:

  • GET / → 200, form renders
  • ?celsius=100 → Fahrenheit: 212.0, ?celsius=-40 → -40.0, ?celsius=abc → invalid input
  • ruff@0.14.1 format --check and ruff check pass

Not verified: an actual gcloud app deploy (needs a GCP project).

Google App Engine decommissioned the python38 runtime, so app.yaml now
targets python313, matching the updated tutorial. Pin Flask 3.1.3 and
refresh the README's dev-server output to what Flask 3.1.3 prints.
