Maintenance sync for Hosting a Django Project on Heroku.

What changed and why

  • README.md: the deploy steps now run heroku addons:create heroku-postgresql:essential-0 after heroku create. Heroku only auto-provisions Postgres for accounts created before May 15, 2023 (docs), so a new account following the old steps got no DATABASE_URL. The updated tutorial now tells readers to provision the essential-0 plan themselves.
  • The pins already match the article's dependencies field (django-heroku==0.3.1, Django==3.2.5), so no requirements change was needed.

Verification

  • source_code_final/portfolio-project: installed requirements.txt on Python 3.9 in a fresh venv (with psycopg2-binary==2.9.1 swapped in for verification, since the VM has no pg_config) and ran python manage.py check. It reported no issues.
  • uvx ruff@0.14.1 format --check django-hosting-heroku and uvx ruff@0.14.1 check django-hosting-heroku both passed.
  • Checked the addons:create command syntax against Heroku's provisioning docs. It wasn't run against a live Heroku account.

The tutorial is also queued for a full update (Python 3.9 and Django 3.2 are end of life, and runtime.txt is deprecated), and that update will rebuild this folder more thoroughly.

…jango Project on Heroku

Heroku no longer auto-provisions Postgres for new accounts, so the deploy
steps now provision the essential-0 plan explicitly, matching the updated
tutorial.
