Summary

Brings facebook::jsi and rnv8::V8Runtime to the Android V8 runtime for parity with NativeScript/ios (including the JSI NativeState, Prototype, MutableBuffer, and external memory pressure APIs from NativeScript/ios#510).

Details

  1. test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi & v8runtime

    • Adds facebook::jsi and rnv8::V8Runtime against the shared V8 14.9.207.39 baseline.
    • Includes heap-tracked NativeStateHolder weak finalizers, createObjectWithPrototype / setPrototypeOf / getPrototypeOf, zero-copy createArrayBuffer(std::shared_ptr<jsi::MutableBuffer>), and setExternalMemoryPressure via v8::ExternalMemoryAccounter.
    • Safe coexistence with tns::ObjectManager: V8Runtime::GetInternalFieldType checks field->IsUint32() on internal field 0 while ObjectManager checks jsInfo->IsExternal().
  2. Per-Isolate JSIRuntime Lookup (JSIRuntime.h / JSIRuntime.cpp)

    • Exposes NativeScriptJSIRuntime() and tns::GetJSIRuntime() backed by tns::RuntimeState::For<JSIRuntimeState>(isolate) so the main runtime and each Worker isolate lazily initialize and cleanly tear down their own rnv8::V8Runtime instance.
  3. CMake, Symbol Exports & Prefab Packaging

    • Compiles jsi and v8runtime translation units with -frtti so external C++ addons and NitroModules can use std::dynamic_pointer_cast on HostObject, NativeState, MutableBuffer, and Runtime across shared library boundaries.
    • Exports NativeScriptJSIRuntime, tns::GetJSIRuntime, facebook::jsi::*, rnv8::*, and their RTTI typeinfo/vtable symbols in exported-symbols.map.
    • Stages <jsi/*.h>, <JSIRuntime.h>, and <V8Runtime*.h> into the AAR Prefab package alongside <node_api.h>.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for JSI-based native integrations to exchange JavaScript values, objects, and functions with the V8 runtime.
    • Added access to the active JavaScript runtime and tools for coordinating access across threads.
    • Added interfaces for runtime memory and garbage-collection information, heap sampling and snapshots, and profiling features where supported.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds the JSI C++ API, common JSI utilities, and a V8-backed runtime implementation. It also adds V8-to-JSI conversion and host callback proxies, then includes the sources and selected headers in the runtime build and Prefab package.

Changes

JSI and V8 Runtime

Layer / File(s) Summary
JSI API and value contracts
test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/jsi.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/instrumentation.h
The JSI runtime, JavaScript value wrappers, host-object interfaces, instrumentation methods, scope type, and exception hierarchy are declared.
JSI value operations and runtime decorators
test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/jsi-inl.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/jsi.cpp, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/decorator.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/threadsafe.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/jsilib.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/jsilib-posix.cpp, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/jsi/LICENSE.md
Common JSI value and error operations are implemented. Runtime decorators, lock-based wrappers, file-backed buffers, and prepared-JavaScript support are added.
V8 value and host callback bridge
test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/JSIV8ValueConverter.*, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/HostProxy.*, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/V8PointerValue.*, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/LICENSE.md
Conversion functions translate values between V8 and JSI. Host proxies forward property access and function calls to JSI callbacks. V8PointerValue manages stored V8 values.
V8 runtime operations and access
test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/V8Runtime.*, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/V8RuntimeConfig.h, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/V8RuntimeFactory.*, test-app/runtime/src/main/cpp/v8runtime/JSIRuntime.*
V8Runtime implements JSI runtime operations, lifecycle, and external-memory tracking. Factory and access functions return runtime instances associated with NativeScript isolates.
Runtime build and Prefab packaging
test-app/runtime/CMakeLists.txt, test-app/runtime/build.gradle
CMake adds JSI and V8 sources to NativeScript and enables RTTI for those translation units. Prefab staging copies JSI headers and selected V8 headers.

The new JSI runtime can crash the app in several ordinary cases. These include runtime and Worker teardown, draining microtasks, using Symbols as property names, reading weak objects after garbage collection, and passing Symbol or BigInt values to native modules. Fix these crashes before merging.

Package the V8 header dependencies.

V8Runtime.h is published by Prefab, but it directly includes libplatform/libplatform.h and v8.h. The staging task copies only the four v8runtime headers. The Prefab package declares no dependencies, so a consumer that includes V8Runtime.h may fail to compile because its V8 include closure is unavailable.

Stage the complete V8 and libplatform include closure, or keep V8Runtime.h private and expose only headers whose dependencies are included in the Prefab package.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Wrap createArrayBuffer in Around like every other override.

WithRuntimeDecorator::createArrayBuffer calls RD::createArrayBuffer without constructing Around around{with_}. In ThreadSafeRuntimeImpl (threadsafe.h), With is WithLock. So this call reaches the plain runtime without holding the lock, while all other runtime operations do hold it. Concurrent use of ThreadSafeRuntime can then call createArrayBuffer on the runtime at the same time as another locked operation. This omission comes from upstream. A one-line fix brings the method in line with the decorator contract.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Store the stack-conversion error in stack_, not message_.

This catch block handles a failure while reading or converting e.stack. It writes the diagnostic to message_, so it overwrites the message extracted earlier in this function. stack_ stays empty and later becomes "no stack". The result is a JSError that loses the real message. The same bug exists in upstream JSI, so you may want to keep this as a local patch or report it upstream.

Guard the no-context path before creating V8Runtime.

RuntimeState::For default-constructs JSIRuntimeState, and V8Runtime enters isolate_->GetCurrentContext() without checking whether it is empty. GetJSIRuntime() can run after PrepareV8Runtime() returns, when its local Context::Scope has ended.

Return nullptr before creating the state when no current context exists.

Handle Symbol and BigInt values in both conversion directions.

ToJSIValue creates jsi::Symbol values at Line 37. ToV8Value handles only undefined, null, bool, number, string, and object. For a jsi::Value that holds a Symbol or a BigInt, the code reaches std::abort() at Line 69. This happens in ordinary cases:

  • A host function returns a Symbol.
  • setProperty or call receives a Symbol argument.
  • JS code passes a Symbol to a host function, and native code returns that value.

In the other direction, ToJSIValue does not check IsBigInt(). A V8 BigInt is not a number and not an object, so it falls through to undefined at Line 43. The value is lost without an error.

Update ToJSIValue to convert V8 BigInt values into jsi::BigInt instead of

Enqueue the callback instead of dropping it.

queueMicrotask is part of the public jsi::Runtime interface. The current body discards the callback without an error. Any JSI module that schedules work with this call never runs that work. The fix uses only one V8 call.

Stop pumping the message loop with a null platform.

s_platform is never assigned. The code that initializes it is commented out at Lines 109-121, so s_platform.get() is nullptr. v8::platform::PumpMessageLoop(nullptr, ...) casts and dereferences the platform pointer. The first JSI consumer that calls drainMicrotasks() then crashes the process. The NativeScript runtime already owns the platform, so pump only the microtask queue here.

Clone the Symbol pointer value for the new PropNameID.

make<jsi::PropNameID> takes ownership of the PointerValue it receives. This line passes the same V8PointerValue* that the jsi::Symbol still owns. When both handles are destroyed, invalidate() runs twice on one object. invalidate() calls delete this, so the second call is a double free.

Return undefined when the weak target was collected.

After the garbage collector frees the target, the weak Global is empty. V8PointerValue::Get then returns an empty Local. The assert at Line 1385 dereferences that Local in debug builds. ToJSIValue calls value->IsUndefined() on it in release builds. Both paths crash. JSI defines lockWeakObject to return undefined when the object is gone.

Report the caught JS exception before the generic error.

When the constructor throws, NewInstance returns empty. The code then throws "CallAsConstructor failed" before it reaches ReportException. The real JS error and its stack are lost. Move the tryCatch check before the empty-result check.
