What this PR does

Makes "Configure" install Unity MCP into DeepSeek Harness as a native DSH bundle, through DSH's own plugin manager, instead of editing the user's root patch file.

Configure writes a configuration-only bundle ($DSH_HOME/bundles/unity-mcp/ — package.json + cordis.patch.yml) and registers it with dsh plugin --profile <name> add <dir>. Unregister runs dsh plugin --profile <name> remove @local/unity-mcp-dsh and deletes the bundle. After a DSH reload the tools surface as mcp__unityMCP__<tool>, and the bundle appears in DSH's plugin manager with a working enable/disable toggle.

Relationship to #1453 — credit where due

This branch builds directly on PR #1453 by @VortDyn and includes his two commits. His DshConfigHelper marker-fenced block surgery, his configurator structure, and his 20 tests are the foundation of this work — the hard problem he solved (never corrupting a user's YAML patch) is why this was possible at all. Treat this as a proposal to extend #1453 with the native bundle path, not a replacement of his contribution. If #1453 merges first, this rebases cleanly; if maintainers prefer, these commits can be pushed onto his branch instead.

The difference in approach: #1453 writes a managed block into $DSH_HOME/cordis.patch.yml (the home patch, which applies to every profile). This PR installs a profile-scoped bundle that DSH's plugin manager owns end-to-end.

Why bundle-instead-of-home-patch:

  • Removable/inspectable through DSH itself — the bundle shows up in DSH's plugin manager UI with an enable toggle; the home patch is invisible to it.
  • No global collisions — while testing feat(clients): auto-configure DeepSeek Harness #1453's approach live, --dump-config showed two @deepseek-ai/dsh-mcp-client rows for the same unityMCP serverName when a bundle row and a home-patch row coexisted (patch layers stack).
  • No surprise writes — see finding 2 below.

Bugs found while testing and fixed here

  1. dsh on Windows is dsh.cmd — Process.Start with UseShellExecute=false cannot resolve it by bare name, so Configure would have failed on every Windows install. Now resolved via DSH_CLI override then PATH+PATHEXT probing, with .cmd/.bat routed through cmd.exe /s /c. Verified against a real install path containing spaces.
  2. McpConfigurationHelper.PathsEqual can never match a PyPI spec — it calls Path.GetFullPath, which throws on > (as in mcpforunityserver>=0.0.0a0), and its catch returns false for identical strings. So the stdio status check could never validate. Existing clients mask this with auto-rewrite (it is also why StartupConfigRewrite logs "refreshed N client config(s)" on every editor launch — the comparison never matches, so configs rewrite forever). This PR adds PackageSourcesEqual (specs compare as text; path-like sources as normalized paths) and uses it in the DSH configurator. The three call sites in McpClientConfiguratorBase still use PathsEqual and are left untouched — happy to fix in a follow-up if maintainers agree, since it changes behavior for every stdio client.
  3. dsh plugin add silently initializes a missing profile as a bare, unusable one — a typo in DSH_PROFILE would "succeed" into junk. Configure now fails fast and lists available profiles.
  4. Mount failures were silent — the generated row now carries failOnStartupError: true, matching DSH's own bundle template.

Findings on #1453 (also posted as a comment there)

  1. StartupConfigRewrite calls CheckStatus(attemptAutoRewrite: true) for every installed client once per Editor session; for DSH that calls Configure() when the managed block is missing, so merely opening a project writes ~/.dsh/cordis.patch.yml with no Setup click. The class docstring says the sweep only refreshes existing configs. This PR's CheckStatus never writes anything — install is a user action only (SupportsAutoConfigure => false).
  2. The home patch is a global layer and collides with rows from other sources (live repro: two rows for one unityMCP serverName).
  3. The PathsEqual spec-comparison bug above — PR feat(clients): auto-configure DeepSeek Harness #1453's auto-rewrite masks it ("Configured" forever), which hides genuine config drift from users.

Test plan

  • 37/37 DSH EditMode tests (DshConfiguratorTests 31 + DshBundleWriterTests 6), including: no-auto-write guarantee (asserts CheckStatus invokes neither the CLI nor the filesystem), stdio status happy path + mismatch (regression for bug 2), dsh.cmd shim routing (spawns a real cmd.exe), profile-guard, legacy home-patch migration, register→unregister leaving user YAML byte-identical.
  • Full EditMode suite on the final commit: see CI / comment below for totals.
  • tools/compile-check.sh (the license-free Roslyn gate): win, osx, linux all pass.
  • Python suite: unchanged by this PR (no Python files touched).
  • Live end-to-end on Windows (manual): Configure → bundle appears in DSH's plugin manager with enable toggle → --dump-config shows exactly one row → DSH agent session lists 48 mcp__unityMCP__* tools → Unregister → tools gone, profile pristine → Register → tools back. The generated row was validated to mount through a real dsh headless boot (all 48 tools) before any of this shipped.

Notes

  • The bundle target profile defaults to desktop (DSH's GUI profile) and is overridable via DSH_PROFILE.
  • CheckStatus's install state is derived from the profile's package.json (dsh.profile.bundles), so the Setup window shows truthful status for exactly the profile that will boot.
  • DSH reads the row via the profile layer; the root home patch is only used for one-shot experiments (dsh web --patch <file>) and is cleaned up on Configure/Unregister if an older version left a managed block there.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added DeepSeek Harness support with profile-specific setup and removal, HTTP or stdio connection options, and status checks for configuration issues.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the client selection guide and setup instructions with DeepSeek Harness details.

VortDyn and others added 6 commits October 9, 2026 21:56
Adds a DeepSeek Harness configurator so "Configure All Detected Clients"
covers DSH the way it already covers Cursor, Codex, Claude Code and Pi.

DeepSeek Harness differs from every other JSON/TOML client here in one way
that had to be handled rather than assumed: `dsh` consumes MCP servers
through its `@deepseek-ai/dsh-mcp-client` plugin, configured as Cordis rows
in a YAML patch layer -- `$DSH_HOME/cordis.patch.yml` (override wins, then
the env var, then `~/.dsh`) -- not a JSON/TOML config file. The package has
no YAML parser, and real patch files may contain features YAML parsers
choke on (`!!js` JS-expression tags, anchors) plus unrelated server rows
that must never be corrupted. All patch-file surgery therefore lives in
`DshConfigHelper`, which manages exactly one marker-fenced block: upsert
replaces only the fenced region, status parses only its known row shape,
and Unregister removes only the fenced region.

Detection is fail-closed in both directions: DSH counts as installed only
once it has run at least once (its home directory exists), so a bare
`~/.dsh` from another tool cannot read as "detected", and a DSH user who
has not configured any MCP server yet is still reported.

Tests cover the block surgery (HTTP/stdio row shapes, round-trip parsing,
idempotent upsert, foreign patches preserved byte-for-byte, register-then-
unregister leaves user content intact) and the configurator contract
(config path, status with and without auto-rewrite).

Docs: capability matrix row, the terminal-client list, and the per-client
DSH section in the configurators guide. Also ignore `.compile-out/`, the
scratch output of tools/compile-check.sh.
Addresses the CodeRabbit review on PR CoplayDev#1453:

- DshConfiguratorTests fed "it''s-a-key" (two literal apostrophes) into
BuildUnityMcpBlock. Quote doubled them into four, and Unquote returned
the doubled value, so the assertion against "it''s-a-key" failed. The
round-trip logic was correct; only the test input was wrong. Pass the
  unescaped value instead.
- Fix the garbled sentence ("may contain features one (e.g.") in the
  DSH section of website/docs/guides/client-configurators.md.
…cs for bundle flow

- RunDshCommand resolves the dsh launcher via DSH_CLI override then PATH+PATHEXT (dsh.cmd/dsh.bat/dsh.exe/dsh) and routes .cmd/.bat shims through cmd.exe /s /c; Process with UseShellExecute=false cannot find dsh.cmd by bare name, so Configure would have failed on every Windows install.

- Configure fails fast when the target DSH profile does not exist (with the available profiles listed), because 'dsh plugin add' silently initializes a missing profile as a bare, unusable one.

- Commit .meta for the new sources per repo convention.

- Docs: describe the native bundle flow (dsh plugin add / remove, profile-scoped) instead of the root home patch.
Matches DSH's own bundle template and the behavior proven in the live end-to-end run: mount failures surface as visible entry activation errors instead of silently degrading.
PathsEqual runs Path.GetFullPath, which throws on the characters package specs contain ('>'), and its catch returns false for identical strings — so the stdio status check could never match a PyPI spec and always reported IncorrectPath (other clients mask this with auto-rewrite). Add PackageSourcesEqual: specs compare as text, path-like sources as normalized paths. Adds the stdio status tests the suite was missing (all previous status tests used HTTP).

…le bundles, docs

- RunDshCommand drains stdout/stderr concurrently (ReadToEndAsync started before the timed wait). Sequential blocking reads could deadlock when the child filled the other pipe, and a hung dsh would freeze the editor because the timeout sat after the reads.

- Bundle paths are profile-qualified (\/bundles/<profile>/unity-mcp/): dsh plugin add symlinks the bundle directory into the profile, so a shared path let one profile's Unregister dangle another's link. Profile names are validated against path traversal. Regression tests cover cross-profile isolation.

- Docs: Auto-config cell is 'no (manual Configure)' per SupportsAutoConfigure => false; bundle paths updated.

- Docstrings: one-line summaries for the 44 diff functions that lacked them.

@coderabbitai review — thanks for the sharp review. All three findings were valid; fixed in the latest push.

1. RunDshCommand sequential-read deadlock (Major) — fixed. Classic .NET hazard and worse than described: since Configure() runs on the editor main thread, a hung dsh would have frozen the whole editor because the timed WaitForExit sat after the blocking reads. Now both pipes are drained with ReadToEndAsync() started before the timed wait, results collected after exit; timeout kills the process and returns immediately.

2. Shared bundle path across profiles (Major) — fixed. Confirmed the symlink behavior on a live DSH install (dependencies showed link:...), so the dangling-link scenario was real. Bundle paths are now profile-qualified ($DSH_HOME/bundles/<profile>/unity-mcp/) and profile names are validated (rejects .., separators, invalid filename chars). Added Bundles_AreIsolatedPerProfile and Unregister_OnlyRemovesTargetProfileBundle regression tests covering exactly the cross-profile delete scenario. Docs updated with the rationale. Note: no migration code — the bundle path never shipped in a release, so only test installs used the old location.

3. Auto-config cell (Minor) — fixed. The cell now reads no (manual Configure), matching SupportsAutoConfigure => false.

Docstring coverage — added one-line <summary> docs to the 44 functions in the diff that lacked them (mostly test methods), including BuildConfigPath, GetManualSnippet, BuildBlock, IsCmdShim, QuoteArg, and LooksLikeFilePath.

Verification pushed alongside: DSH EditMode suites green (40 tests), tools/compile-check.sh green for win/osx/linux, and the cross-profile behavior additionally verified against a live DSH install (bundle appears in the plugin manager UI with a working enable toggle; unregister removes exactly one profile's registration).

🔒 Security & Privacy | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Make accepted profile names safe for the Windows CLI.

On Windows, GetBundleDir accepts a profile such as R&D. RunDshCommand then places that name unquoted in a cmd.exe /s /c command because BuildArgumentsString quotes only whitespace and double quotes. cmd.exe treats & as a command separator. A profile that passes this validation and the existing-profile check can therefore break installation or execute an unintended command. Escape arguments for cmd.exe, or reject shell metacharacters before using the profile. (learn.microsoft.com)

@sobhanb-eth Thanks for the fixes and the technical details. I’ll review the latest changes, including the process timeout handling, profile isolation, documentation, and regression tests.

Thanks for clarifying the editor-main-thread constraint and confirming DSH’s bundle-link behavior.

Learning: In CoplayDev/unity-mcp, DeepSeekHarnessConfigurator.Configure() runs on the Unity editor main thread. RunDshCommand must drain stdout and stderr concurrently and enforce a timeout to prevent a hung DSH process from freezing the editor.

Learning: In CoplayDev/unity-mcp PR #1471, live DeepSeek Harness verification showed bundle dependencies registered as link: paths. DSH registrations therefore depend on the bundle directory remaining present. Bundle directories must be profile-scoped so unregistering one profile does not leave another profile with a dangling link.

…xe metacharacters

- Unregister now checks the dsh plugin remove result: on failure it keeps the
bundle (the profile still links the directory; deleting it would dangle the
symlink) and reports the manual command. When the profile does not list the
bundle, leftover files are deleted without invoking the CLI.

- Every process argument is double-quoted with standard CommandLineToArgvW
  escaping: cmd.exe metacharacters (& | < > ^) are literal inside quotes, so
names like R&D and home paths containing ampersands work. Percent cannot be
escaped on a cmd /c command line (%% stays literal while %VAR% expands even
inside quotes), so profile names reject percent and double-quote outright.

@coderabbitai review — round 2 findings both valid; fixed in the latest push.

1. Unregister deletes the bundle when dsh plugin remove fails (Major) — fixed. The removal result is now checked: on a nonzero exit the bundle is kept (the profile still links the directory — deleting it would dangle the symlink exactly as described) and Unregister throws with the exact manual command so the user can retry. When the profile does not list the bundle at all, the leftover files are deleted without invoking the CLI (nothing links them, so no dangling state is possible). Regression tests: Unregister_RemovalFailure_KeepsBundleAndThrows, Unregister_Unregistered_DeletesFilesWithoutRemove.

2. cmd.exe metacharacters in profile names (Major) — fixed. Verified the cmd semantics empirically before choosing the fix: &, |, ^ are literal inside double quotes (so quoting is sufficient for them), but %VAR% expands even inside quotes and %% is not reduced on a cmd /c command line — so percent cannot be escaped there. The fix is therefore: (a) every argument is now double-quoted with standard CommandLineToArgvW escaping (backslash-before-quote doubling), which keeps legitimate names like R&D and home paths containing & working; (b) profile names reject " and % outright (GetBundleDir validation). Regression coverage: the cmd-shim test now round-trips R&D and C:\bundle dir through a real cmd.exe invocation and asserts they arrive as data; GetBundleDir_RejectsUnsafeProfileNames covers %/" rejection and asserts R&D is accepted.

Docstrings updated for the reworked methods. Verification: DSH EditMode suites green (42 tests), tools/compile-check.sh green for win/osx/linux.

@sobhanb-eth Thanks for the fixes and the detailed verification report. I’ll review the latest push, focusing on:

  • Bundle preservation when dsh plugin remove fails.
  • Cleanup of unregistered bundle files without invoking DSH.

  • Regression coverage for both findings.

DSH's plugin-manager toggle keeps the dependency installed while dropping the
entry from dsh.profile.bundles. Unregister skipped dsh plugin remove in that
state and deleted the directory the dependency links. Unregister now runs the
CLI when the profile declares the bundle in either place and only skips it for
bare leftover files. Status checks keep the strict enabled look: a disabled
bundle mounts no tools.

Regression test: Unregister_DisabledButInstalled_StillRunsRemove.

@coderabbitai review — round 3 finding valid; fixed in the latest push.

Disabled-but-installed bundle removal (Major) — fixed. You're right about the toggle semantics: enabled (dsh.profile.bundles) and installed (dependencies) are separate states, so a disabled bundle kept its dependency while my round-2 gate skipped dsh plugin remove and deleted the directory the dependency links.

Unregister now uses ProfileDeclaresBundle, which treats the bundle as present when it appears in either dsh.profile.bundles (enabled) or dependencies (installed, possibly disabled) — dsh plugin remove runs in both cases, and the CLI is only skipped when neither declares it (bare leftover files, safe to delete). Status checks intentionally keep the strict dsh.profile.bundles look: a disabled bundle mounts no tools, so the Setup window shows Not Configured and clicking Configure re-enables it via dsh plugin add.

Regression test added as requested: Unregister_DisabledButInstalled_StillRunsRemove simulates the toggle (dependency present, bundles entry removed) and asserts remove still runs and the bundle is cleaned up.

Verification: DSH EditMode suites green (43 tests), tools/compile-check.sh green for win/osx/linux.

🟡 Minor · Quote the profile in manual DSH commands. · DeepSeekHarnessConfigurator.cs:239

MCPForUnity/Editor/Clients/Configurators/DeepSeekHarnessConfigurator.cs:239
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Quote the profile in manual DSH commands.

When Configure fails for an accepted profile such as R&D, the error tells the user to copy dsh plugin --profile R&D add .... In Windows cmd.exe, & separates commands, so the copied retry can use the wrong profile and execute an unintended command. Quote the displayed arguments separately from the runner's argument array. Apply the same correction to the Unregister retry and manual snippet commands.

@sobhanb-eth Thanks for the fix and the verification report. I’ll review the latest push, focusing on:

  • ProfileDeclaresBundle checking both enabled and installed registrations.
  • Unregister removing disabled-but-installed bundles through the CLI.
  • Status checks continuing to require an enabled bundle.
  • Unregister_DisabledButInstalled_StillRunsRemove regression coverage.

This matches the enabled-versus-installed distinction in the existing learning.

Learning: In CoplayDev/unity-mcp, DeepSeek Harness tracks enabled bundles in dsh.profile.bundles and installed bundles in dependencies. A disabled bundle can retain a dependency linked to its bundle directory. DeepSeekHarnessConfigurator.Unregister() uses ProfileDeclaresBundle to check both locations and must run dsh plugin remove when either declares the bundle. It skips the CLI only when neither declares the bundle. Status checks intentionally require the enabled entry in dsh.profile.bundles because disabled bundles mount no tools; Configure re-enables the bundle through dsh plugin add.
